Movie love

The Young Victoria

The daughters and I went to this one when the boys were winter camping. We loved it.  What a great love story, those two: V & A. I knew the general story but loved knowing more. (Bummer about the typhoid, though.) Emily Blunt is lovely as Victoria and I'm seriously crushing on Albert/Rupert Friend (who I noticed in the .05 version of Pride and Prejudice, too). On the way home (Maddy still sniffling from the ending) we talked about being choosy in finding a partner and holding out for an Albert-type of relationship.

. . .

Invictus

"I am the master of my fate/ I am the captain of my soul"

We saw this last night, G and I, and talked about it all the way home.  Inspiring (again true) story about Nelson Mandela's early presidency in South Africa and the struggling national rugby team; both became instruments in the others' success and acceptance.  You can't go wrong emulating Mandela's leadership.

. . .

Bright Star

I went to this by myself since it only had one showing in one theater in the middle of the day and I had heard so many good things.  Loved it, though.  Depiction of sweet (alas, doomed) romance between John Keats and Fanny Brawne.  This is exactly the kind of movie G encourages me to see without him :) .  Well done, so tragic.  (Bummer about the typhoid.)

. . .

Also seen this month: Avatar, An Education, It's Complicated, Sherlock Holmes, & Up in the Air.  That's a little embarrassing but what can I say? It's one of the activities we love, especially when it's too cold to go anywhere else and we need to get out of the house before we go crazy.  Apparently I'm in a British, historical, true story kind of mood...

LOVE LOVE LOVE The Young Victoria. My girlfriend and I watched it online illegally last spring before it was released here in the US. Last night, 10 of us saw it in the theatre. It is divine. My bff and I are going to take our daughters as well to get them excited for our England trip when they turn 12. I LOVE this movie.

thanks for the recommendations. I liked Avatar and had to remind myself that it was computer generated. The avatars were NOT real people. Amazing to me. Sherlock was pretty good, but I was probably in the mood for a romantic comedy.

I love movies. One of the disadvantages of living in "the country" is not being able to see movies like Bright Star. Young Victoria may get here at some point. Thank goodness for Netflix. British film and tv is my favorite. I made Matthew watch Shakespeare in Love the other night. Oh so good!

How was An Education? I've had my eye on it as well as Young Victoria.

Hi Annie
One of our new years resolutions is to remember to come over here now we don't get your updates through blogger!
Glad to hear you all enjoyed the Young Victoria film. I have heard about Invictus and hopefully when it comes out over here we will get to see it. Tim saw Sherlock Holmes with his borther last week. They really enjoyed it. We saw St Trinians and The Legend of The Fritton Gold and The Nativty which are both british films and were really funny.
Wishing you health and happiness in 2010.

You should do a movie review blog! Seriously!

How was Up in the Air? Brad and I are reading the book right now. Not sure if I love it....but maybe George Clooney will charm me through.

Jen and Gabi, since you asked :)...

An Education: I really enjoyed it; you have to stay with it because at first I was really bugged by this older man/young girl seduction but it did make me think. I decided that's it's a cautionary tale (I think) about becoming truly independent the right way (not falsely independent or swept up through coercion masked as rebellion). I loved Carey Mulligan in it (she was a minor role in P&Prejudice as one of the younger sisters but has really come in to her own as the lead here.) Let me know if you see it...I'd love to chat about it.

Up in the Air: We liked it okay but didn't love. Definitely didn't feel like one of the best of the year, at least not for me.

We agree with you about Young Victoria and Bright Star. Haven't seen Invictus yet, but plan on it. Thanks for the recommendations. We had a great movie holiday too. Avatar blew me away, even though I was skeptical about it. Ain't movie-goin' grand? Maddy said she loved Victoria and I would love to have seen it with you.
