Anticipating masterpieces

Oh my, I am loving Sunday evenings this winter!  PBS + Masterpiece Classics are treating us to some fabulous offerings.  Have you been watching?

. . .

Emma (3 parts: January 24-February 7, 2010)

"Let's cheer ourselves up; let us think of superior men..." (p.s. I love the wallpaper in Emma's house.)

 . . .

The 39 Steps (February 28, 2010)

Ah, Rupert Penry-Jones + the hilarious Hitchcock-inspired play, which I was lucky to catch in London a couple of years ago and this fall in NYC. Can't wait.

. . .

Diary of Anne Frank  (April 11, Holocaust Remembrance Day) + Video Diary project

Maddy and her friend are currently making a movie based on the Diary of Anne Frank for a social studies project. Do you remember the first time you read it?  "In spite of everything, I still believe that people are really good at heart." Heartbreaking, poignant, inspiring. I think I need to pull out the book and read it again this spring.

Catch the rest of the most excellent schedule here, including encore presentations of Sense & Sensibility, Northanger Abbey, and some interesting new ones.  Bravo, BBC/PBS/WGBH!

And now, back to the 21st century and I'm off to take the girls to the (thankfully not Jane Austen-era) dentist.

I recorded Emma but have not watched it--I must wait until I have no distractions in order to savor it.

Thanks for the heads up about the upcoming specials. Who can resist Rupert Penry-Jones? Not I said the fly! And Anne Frank...will definitely set the DVR.

LOVE me some Masterpiece. AND some Rupert Penry-Jones. Be still my heart! What did you think of Cranford Returns? I was disappointed. Sometimes it's best to leave a good thing alone. I haven't made it through the first episode of Emma, yet. I am liking it, but not liking the inconsistencies with the book and the strange timing. I hate it when movies expect you to suspend your belief. Was Emma 12 when her sister got married and now she simply puts her hair up and she's 23? Lame.

Love me the PBS Masterpieces. And me the Rupert Penry Jones. Delish.

Love love love this version of Emma. Ramola Garai is wonderful. She was in Daniel Deronda, one of my faves from George Eiiot. An old Masterpiece Theatre piece. It also featured Hugh Dancey, whom I enjoy. I like Ramola's take on Emma - a little pluckier, a little more obvious and petulant. Great performances all around. The guy who plays what's his name, the Jeremy Northam character was Eli on a good series that they canceled last year. :-( He was a lawyer named Eli who had some sort of celestial powers. I liked it very much.

I miss public television...I mean American public television. We've got plenty of "public" where the programming is all Chavez all the time, but he doesn't really resemble Rupert Penry Jones and therefore leaves much to be desired.

Emma was my first Jane Austen, and as my first, has a special place in my heart. We watched it on Sunday (with a room full of couples) and everyone (men and women) were laughing out loud. LOVE Knightley!
