Zoinks.

Remember that time when my college daughter mentioned a guy who asked her out on a date
and said that he used to live in our stake in Virginia
and did I remember his parents
and remember how I did what any social media savvy parent would do
and sneakily looked him up on Facebook so I could see who she was talking about
and see whether I recognized his parents
and I might have clicked through a few pictures
and read a few statuses
and then a few hours later I got an email saying he had accepted my friend request
that I must have inadvertently, very unstealthily and clumsily clicked on while Facebook stalking him?

Yeah, that was an embarrassing, whoopsie daisy Mom moment.

(Thankfully L just laughed. I'm going to stealthily unfriend him, though, bless his good sport heart.)

Overheard in the kitchen, yesterday

We recently got a letter from the middle school, alerting us to the fact that the 8th grade will soon be starting the human sexuality portion of the health class.

M: Oh, I remember when we had that program in health. Is Mr. ______ still teaching it?

S: [reluctant to discuss this] Yeah...

M: Don't worry, it's not that bad.

S: [dubious] Really?...

M: Yeah, I'm not gonna lie, I kind of liked sex ed. There was a lot of role playing.

S: .......

Me: [bursting out laughing] I think you'd better clarify that, Maddy.

. . .

Of course we established that she meant there were lots of roleplaying exercises about saying no and making choices and that sort of thing. But we still have a good laugh about it.

Commodious reading

This weekend as I cleaned the bathroom I noticed that a July 2010 issue of Real Simple magazine has been sitting on the shelf in the downstairs bathroom for a long time. I knew this because I could recite the quote on the spine of the magazine without looking.

Curious, I wandered into the family room where the rest of the crew was lounging.

"Hey guys, complete this sentence: 'I like things to happen..."

Everyone piped up, in chorus: "...and if they don't happen, I like to make them happen. Winston Churchill."

And then we debated the fittingness of that certain location for that particular quote. Because we're mature like that.

Never let it be said we don't know how to multi-task. Just think of all the chapters of scriptures and Shakespearean sonnets we could have memorized in those nine months!
