First of a million kisses
{warning: melancholy alert! melancholy alert! what is it with me lately??}
I have spent an entire evening reviving an old obsession with a favorite band. Never mind that I am doing a workshop tomorrow that I need to prepare for. Or that my to-do list does not include chasing down videos of a 20-years-defunct band.
I was in London, on my own, away from home...
really away from home for the first time.
Umbrellas were very often involved,

I fell in love with the Scottish band Fairground Attraction (led by the fantastic Eddi Reader) & listened to the tape (yes, tape) constantly. Truly, it was the soundtrack of my time there. This was one of my favorites (note: it's a little slower than the original recording. And, yes, she's a hand gesturer. Try and look past it if you can.)
Achhh, that makes me want to be Scottish. Sadly, the band broke up year after recording their album but Eddi continues to record (and her brother, Francis, is the lead singer for the Trashcan Sinatras by the way. Hmm...did I just cross the line to too nerdy? This post might just be for me.)
Today when it came on my ipod, those London memories came flooding back. Along with the current-day gratitude that the person I was thinking about back then as I walked around London became the man I'm married to now. Allelujah!

Moon River always sends me back to lazy family vacations on the Oregon coast. From one memory to another--thanks.
p.s. I always wanted/wanted to be a huckleberry friend.
that song was beautiful. Love to see the photos of 19 yr old Annie.
When we were cleaning the garage the other day my kids found a tape. They had no idea what it was. So sad. I guess we're old.
Love hearing "you" stuff like that. And the rewinding was part of the fun, because you just sat there getting more and more excited for when you could HEAR THAT SONG AGAIN.
(only you, by Yaz...over and over and over)
What a lovely post. I did study abroad in Paris when I was 19. When I listen to Annie Lennox it is almost painful because of the unstoppable flood of vivid memories, images and feelings from that bejeweled time in my life. Experiencing that kind of nostalgia for the first time was when I finally understood the meaning of the phrase "you can never go home again"--but for me, it was that I can never be 19 in Paris again. I love my life today, but it would be pure joy to revisit that other life for just 24 hours.
Oooooo that was a great song and great great post! Songs and smells take me back faster than any photo ever could.
I love that song! And reading that post made me nostalgic for my days of youth err...early adulthood in France!
I don't think you are nerdy for posting about Fairground Attraction. I remember their song "It's got to be Perfect." That was a good one.
It's wonderful how songs from the past remind you of certain people and can trigger memories of what you were doing then.
I have always wanted to be Scottish. Something about the accent...so cool. I love the music! Might have to add that to my own playlist. Love seeing your past through these flashbacks. More, please!
Emily--we can be huckleberry friends. I've always wanted to have or be one, too.
Sally--exactly. I've been trying to write a story about London and the fullness of feelings are impossibly tender, almost painful, knowing I won't ever go back to then.
