Black gold, Texas tea

We got a message from our bank yesterday that there was suspicious activity on Greg's credit card. They were putting a hold on it until they were able to speak to us.

I called Greg right away. He checked his wallet--the card was still there--and we tried to think about our spending over the last few days that might have triggered the suspicion. Me: grocery store? pet supplies? He: ATM machine? hardware store? We couldn't think of anything extravagant or exciting (someday I would like to set off the warning flags with our own out-of-character purchase, though. Wouldn't that be fun?)

Greg called me back after speaking to the bank. "Yup, someone got a hold of my credit card number and they were going crazy in Detroit. They already used it three times."

"They did?! What did they buy? How much did they spend? Are we accountable for it?"

He laughed before answering.

Guess what the crooks did with the number? Did they get jewelry or electronics or plane tickets? No. Did they buy a new wardrobe or go to expensive restaurants? No again. They got gas. As in filled up their tank(s) with gasoline. That's it. And a sad commentary on the price of crude oil it is.

(p.s. I guess it was the Michigan use of the card that set off the bells and whistles, not the price}

Last year that happened with Ben's card. Gas. And groceries.

Hope it gets cleared up soon!

THAT IS PATHETHIC (the outrageous gas prices AND the fact that someone stole your card). Thank heavens for fraud alert, right?

First time visitor, coming over from Oma's. This post registered big time with me. My Dear Hubby had his wallet stolen from work a couple years ago and even tho gas prices weren't that high, that's what the crook used DH's debit card for, too!! And some cheap clothes from one of those strip-mall stores that 'skaters' and other young people go to. I check our bank account quite often so I saw the 'weird' purchases right away and called the bank and closed DH's card immediately. When I called him at work to check and see if someone had taken his card, it was then he realized his entire wallet was gone! Because the card use was fraudulent, we were reimbursed. I enjoyed my visit here and will be back! Please stop by and say hello if you get a chance! :-)

Hey Annie,
Chris actually got a call from his bank due to his own "out-of-character" purchases. (If Chris can have "out-of-character" purchases.) He was visiting Chicago and went on a bit of a spree down their ritzy avenue. hehe

That's so sad.
For everyone involved.
I *almost* feel sorry for them.
The price of gas makes me feel a little desperate too. (Not enough to make me take up a life of crime...but quite dispirited just the same.) Glad the fraud police caught it early.

Seriously. I filled up my car yesterday and it stopped at 100 bucks. Scary.

That is so funny! It's a sad day when living the life is means getting free gas.

I'm actually laughing at this post-I think it is hilarious that they stole gas. Crazy!

I suppose they should get points for ingenuity in the face of rising gas prices. Glad that was all they did and that the activity was caught!

Can I borrow your card next? Our gas in San Diego is almost 4$ a gallon!

My neighbor had her gas siphoned out of her car in the middle of the night. Completely crazy.

Ummm yeah I have set off the bank before with my own crazy purchases...I think the bank is getting used to me now!
