So I got a new camera.

I ~love~ it~ so~ much
{think happy sobbing, like Holly Hunter in Raising Arizona*}.

I'm still figuring it out, mind you.

Like how do you get all three people in a photo to behave at one time?

My back-to-school self portrait

He eated my cookie. And probably yours.
His cuteness saves him on a daily basis.

So now that I have a serious big girl camera, I have a whole new list of must-haves!  Lenses, software, things-I-haven't-figured-out-what-they-are-yet.  What are your favorite hints or gadgets for making photos with zing?  (Not a rhetorical question.  I really want to know.)

*if you don't know what I'm talking about (or just if you want a good laugh today), you must see this clip from Raising Arizona (around 8:05-8:20 is the specific moment but it's all hilarious).

YAY! That is awesome, and I can't believe it's got 12 megapixels. Man, it just keeps getting better and better.

First things first, get yourself Bryan Peterson's "Understanding Exposure." Changed photography for me, and will make you only want to shoot in manual mode. Also, for fun, get the Canon 50mm/1.8 lens. It's like $90 or something, and really a lot of fun.

Can't wait to see all the beauty your artistic eye churns out.

P.S. I want to marry your red bookshelf in the background of your self-portrait. LOVE it.

yeah. what christie said. i think i'll go buy that book myself.

i recently learned to use my flash while shooting outdoors in the sun. it takes the shadows off from under the eyes and the side of the nose.

i'm sure that's like a "duh" thing to most everyone. but i'm new at this.

Wow. Your skin and eyebrows look AMAZING in that shot! (Or is it just the awesome camera?...)

My husband swears that one of the best things about marrying into my family was exposure to Raising Arizona. Glad to see you appreciate the hilarity.

I would appreciate a camera with 8 MORE MEGAPIXELS than my own...but then I would expect awesomely artistic shots, such as yours, and basically I think that's the camerawoman, not the camera.

I am blog hopping and come across your blog. I hope you do not mind me jumping in on here.

I have two things I cannot live without and that is my 50mm 1.4 and Lightroom. I hardly take that lens off my camera and Lightroom is a must for my editing.

christie is right about UE it is a must read.

P.S. I instantly liked you when I read your profile page and you included "China" in your answer to the random question. =)

Yep, I'm going to agree with others and say get the 50mm 1.4 or 1.8; they are fantastic! I love Photoshop too. Like Christie I am also a fan of Understanding Exposure.

Have fun at school! xoxo, m
