Travelin' songs

We will be heading across the country in early August, caravan style, from Boston to Bear Lake (UT). Crazy! Fun! Lengthy! We've been researching routes and roadside attractions and putting together a mega playlist to get us through.

Here's where you come in: what's your favorite travelin' music? What song(s) would you suggest? I really do want to know. Even if you wandered onto this entry because you googled "orthodontic neck gear" or "streetpaint like real rollercoaster."* Even if we've never met.

Seriously. We have 40+ hours of driving to fill here, folks! Fill our ears with music! All genres welcome.

. . .

I ordered this Journey Journal from Cracked Designs to jot some of our roadtrip memories. I also LOVE this one.  What the heck, maybe we'll do both. That's a lot of car time, after all.

My kids are much younger than yours, so I'm not sure that these suggestions will be helpful. One of our favorite "on the road" songs is Life is a Highway. I like Tom Cochrane's version, My kids like Rascal Flats. In any case, it's usually repeated a minimum of 4 times when we're traveling. That would be in a row. Another one we all really like is Abba Gold. This next is kind of kids music, but I really love Renee and Jeremy's C'mon (let the happy in) CD. They have a bunch of great YouTube videos that you can check out too. Another kind of along that same line (kids music that's fun for adults to listen to too--if you like folk music) is Elizabeth Mitchell's Little Bird. Have a great trip! We love Bear Lake and hope to head that way ourselves once we finish an across town move.

I've been wanting to tell you too that I so appreciate your blog--your insights, your introductions, and simply sharing your life. There have been times since I started reading here that you've given me hope, brought me joy and simply expanded my world. Words seem inadequate, but Thank you quite sincerely for that.

How fun, I hope you have a great time and that your ac holds out:) And try to avoid Chicago, for some reason, we always get stuck in horrible traffic when passing by, but maybe you don't need to get close. I did 32 hours (both ways) last summer and listened to (a lot of) what we listened to on 8 track when I was a kid on road trips: Neil Diamond's Hot August Night. Might sound silly, but I love it.

We like all things John Denver (Country Roads is especially fun when traveling); Beach Boys, Journey, and, oddly enough, The Black Eyed Peas. Lady Gaga and Adele and still making the rounds in our playlists.

Getting so excited to see you!!! I'm so happy you're detouring through our neck of the woods!

John Denver is my favorite traveling music. And songs my parents liked that I grew up with (mostly old cowboy tunes). I feel it gets my kids used to it but there's plenty of time to add in stuff they are more familiar with too. Also, I'm sure you have things worked out but we live 5 minutes from I-90 on the west side of cleveland if you're taking a northern route and need a pit stop. I'm assuming you're headed more south but thought it was worth a shot :) Good luck--Emily

My favorite is the Committments. A little Mustang Sally? Who wears that same old shabby dress?

Whenever I travel I must listen to Dar Williams' "Iowa." Especially if I'm in Iowa. It's my favorite song by her. Also, have you listened to the They Might Be Giants kids albums? Fun and educational! "Here Comes Science" is my favorite, but the other two are good. "Here Come the ABCs" has a song I liked called "C is for Conifer." Awesome. Other songs on our car playlist include "I Am Woman" by Helen Reddy, "The Princess Who Saved Herself" by Jonathan Coulton, "Uncle John's Band" performed by the Indigo Girls (or really, most things by the Indigo Girls who have some great traveling songs. We can discuss that if you want.), some stuff by Allison Krauss, some of Coldplay, a little Cat Stevens. Yup. But definitely "Iowa," especially if you're driving through Iowa.
